Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a significant operation, police have arrested notorious Bangladeshi pirate Majnu Ghazi from the New Town area of Kolkata, where he had been hiding for almost a year. The arrest follows a tip-off received by Rahda police station in North 24 Parganas district, suggesting Ghazi's presence in West Bengal.
According to sources, Majnu Ghazi had long been on the radar for robbing fishermen in the waterways of Bangladesh’s Sundarbans region. Considered a dangerous figure in those areas, Ghazi allegedly led a group that looted boats and terrorized locals. His relocation to India was seen as an attempt to escape Bangladeshi law enforcement.
Acting on detailed surveillance and intelligence inputs, police traced his movements to New Town, a planned township in eastern Kolkata. A raid was conducted on Saturday night, resulting in his arrest. Police also recovered a pipe gun and a live cartridge from his possession during the operation.
Following his interrogation, Ghazi confessed to having crossed over through Sundarbans water routes, bypassing regular immigration channels. On the basis of his statements, another accused, Kamal Sheikh, was arrested early Sunday morning from the Rahda police station area. Kamal is also believed to be a Bangladeshi national involved in cross-border criminal activity.
Investigations reveal that both suspects had been living in West Bengal for a year, possibly committing crimes under assumed identities. The police are now trying to uncover the network that helped them cross the border and settle within India undetected for such a long time.
